The Kenyan government has taken a critical step by putting a temporary stop to Worldcoin, a freshly launched cryptocurrency and digital identity project, which was founded with an ambitious goal to distinguish humans from AI systems.

This unexpected halt was revealed by Minister Kithure Kindiki, Kenya’s internal security chief, through a Facebook post on August 2. The concerns stem primarily from Worldcoin's methodology of collecting crucial biometric information such as iris scans. Kenyans who participated were given a digital ID known as World ID.

Minister Kindiki's announcement has shaken up the tech world, especially since Worldcoin was co-founded by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the creative force behind the renowned AI-based chatbot, ChatGPT.

The Kenyan government's anxiety revolves around the risk factors associated with Worldcoin's practices. Relevant security, financial, and data protection agencies are now diving into inquiries and investigations to dig into the legality and authenticity of Worldcoin’s activities in the country.

After three years in development, Worldcoin was officially launched on July 24, 2023. The project's mission was to create a foolproof method to differentiate humans from online bots in an age where AI technology is rapidly advancing. A key part of the initiative was the creation of a digital ID system based on proof-of-personhood.

This digital ID system was aimed at creating a unique digital identity by scanning an individual's iris. While innovative, the project has also raised eyebrows and concerns regarding privacy and potential misuse of personal data.

While the investigation is underway, the Kenyan government has sent a stern warning against any entity or individual involved with Worldcoin. Anyone found to be aiding or engaging in the activities described may face appropriate action.

The immediate impact of the government's decision on Worldcoin's global expansion plans remains uncertain. Yet, the situation does highlight the ever-present challenges and dilemmas faced by governments and regulators in dealing with new and rapidly evolving technological innovations, especially when personal and sensitive information is at play.
