Facebook acquires chatbot startup Servicefriend for Calibra customer service

Mon, 23 Sep 2019, 06:28 am UTC

Facebook has acquired Israeli chatbot startup Servicefriend to help provide customer service for its upcoming Libra cryptocurrency and related Calibra digital wallet service, according to a report by the Marker.

As per TechCrunch, Facebook neither confirmed nor denied the acquisition, saying that “we acquire small tech companies from time to time” and that “we don’t always discuss our plans.”

Notably, both Servicefriend’s co-founders, Ido Arad and Shahar Ben Ami have updated their LinkedIn profiles indicating that they are now working for Facebook, specifically within the Calibra digital wallet group. The move pretty much affirms that the acquisition did take place.

Also, Servicefriend’s website confirmed the acquisition, without directly stating Facebook was the buyer.

We are thrilled to share that Servicefriend is now moving to the next chapter of our exciting journey,” the statement read. Then, a link entitled “see what Facebook has to say about us” can be found at the bottom of the announcement, which will redirect users to a case study of the firm working with the social networking giant.

Founded in 2015, Servicefriend has established a range of customer service bot-related products and solutions, such as 24/7 self-service concierge service and async messaging orchestration.

As previously reported, Calibra wants to please global lawmakers by hiring appropriate expertise to help the digital wallet comply with all regulatory requirements. Facebook has opened jobs for its Calibra unit, with positions ranging from Head of Compliance to Head of Fraud.
