Crypto financial services firm Bitcoin Suisse announced in a press release on Wednesday that it is supporting the municipality of Zermatt in accepting Bitcoin as payment for local taxes and official transactions.

A point-of-sale (POS) solution provided by Bitcoin Suisse has been installed in the town hall. Zermatt is the second municipality in Switzerland to accept cryptocurrency as official means of payment. Zug was the first city to do so.

Aside from having access to a POS in the Zermatt town hall, taxpayers can now also pay their taxes at a communal level using the digital currency. However, taxpayers have to apply to the Zermatt Tax Office for a crypto payment solution first before they can access the online payment solution via an e-mail link and transfer bitcoins directly from the crypto wallet.

Bitcoin Suisse said that it will exchange the bitcoins into Swiss francs and transfer the amount in CHF to the municipality’s bank account.

“By accepting Bitcoin as a means of payment, Zermatt finds itself once more among the pioneers and supporting a growing ecosystem of cryptocurrencies,” said Armin Schmid, Head Crypto Payments of Bitcoin Suisse.

On the other hand, Romy Biner-Hauser, Mayor of Zermatt, is convinced that the new tax payment option meets the demand of the residents.

“An innovative, pioneering spirit is one of the trademarks of Zermatt, which is why we are happy to support residents in providing them with the solutions they require,” Biner-Hauser said.

Meanwhile, consulting giant PwC Switzerland has acquired ChainSecurity AG, a blockchain startup. According to ChainSecurity, following the partnership, the company will focus on accelerating PwC Switzerland’s blockchain audits, including technical reviews of smart contracts and blockchain platforms and risk assurance services for customers who own crypto assets.
