The experience of Web3 has been described as offering users more control but at the cost of complexity, according to several UX designers. Improving the user experience (UX) is seen as a crucial factor in mainstream adoption of Web3. However, the unique properties of blockchain technology present challenges in designing user-friendly applications comparable to the Web2 era.
Addressing these challenges in a tweet on July 12, 0xDesigner, a Web3 UI/UX designer, compared using Web3 to driving a manual car. In the blockchain world, there is no "undo" button, and every action is irreversible with potentially costly errors. 0xDesigner argues that for many users, the aspect of control and ownership that blockchain provides may not hold much appeal.
Thomas Ling, a former User Interface (UI) designer with experience in both blockchain tech firm Immutable and Web2 gaming studio Riot Games, shared a similar sentiment. According to Ling, the UI in Web2 is typically more straightforward because control and ownership are more centralized. In contrast, Web3 gives users more control, but this complexity creates a more intricate backend.
Ling explained that this complexity limits the "magic" designers can employ to make Web3 applications user-friendly. The complexity and resulting design tradeoffs create an interesting paradox: simplifying Web3 flows would require stripping away some control from the user, which is a fundamental aspect of Web3's appeal.
0xDesigner also highlighted another issue: the lack of emphasis on user experience in many Web3 projects. The engineering-driven nature of these projects often leads to more technically focused solutions. The designer believes that for Web3 to achieve mass adoption, it is crucial to provide truly useful applications, such as in gaming and music. And for these crypto applications to succeed, they must "feel invisible" to the user.
