Ethereum Developers Gear Up for Dencun Upgrade: Scaling and Securing the Blockchain

Simultaneous Upgrades on Execution and Consensus Layers Aim to Enhance Ethereum's Scalability and Security

Ethereum developers are preparing for the upcoming major change in the blockchain known as "Dencun."

The name combines two simultaneous upgrades happening on the blockchain's main layers. The execution layer will undergo the "Cancun" upgrade, while the consensus layer will experience the "Deneb" upgrade.

At the heart of Dencun is EIP 4844, also referred to as "proto-danksharding," which aims to scale the blockchain by expanding the capacity for data "blobs."

These changes are expected to reduce fees for layer 2 rollups. Although initially intended for the Shapella upgrade, the proposal was postponed to the next upgrade due to its size and complexity.

During an official call, Ethereum developers discussed the technical aspects of EIP 4844 and confirmed their intention to launch the Dencun upgrade in the second half of 2023. The upgrade is also anticipated to incorporate several other technical enhancements, namely EIPs 6780, 6475, and 1153.

The Cancun upgrade, occurring on the execution layer, will introduce improvements that facilitate the addition of new features to the blockchain.

Conversely, the Deneb upgrade, happening on the consensus layer, aims to enhance the blockchain's security.

The Dencun upgrade follows the successful Shapella upgrade, which enabled staked ETH withdrawals.

Ethereum developers are continuously working towards improving the scalability, security, and usability of the blockchain, as it remains one of the most popular and widely used blockchains in the cryptocurrency space.
