Gods Unchained Expands Reach, Secures Spot on Epic Games Store

Web3 Trading Card Game Enters New Realm of Popularity with Access to 230 Million Subscribers

Gods Unchained, the Web3 trading card game designed by Immutable Games, has achieved a significant milestone by securing a spot on the Epic Games Store, opening doors to its vast subscriber base of 230 million gamers. This transition, announced on June 21, is expected to propel the game to new heights of popularity.

Operating in a similar fashion to well-known trading card games like Hearthstone or Magic: The Gathering Arena, Gods Unchained sets itself apart with its unique system of card ownership and exchange. Leveraging Ethereum's layer-2 network, Immutable X, the game assigns each card a nonfungible token (NFT), enabling real ownership and tradability. Since its debut in June 2019, Gods Unchained has garnered an impressive player base, boasting 80,000 weekly active players as of January 2022.

The Epic Games Store, a digital game distribution hub that competes with platforms like Steam or GOG.com, boasts a substantial following of over 230 million gamers, as revealed in its "2022 Year in Review" post.

Daniel Paez, executive producer of Gods Unchained, lauded the game's inclusion on the Epic Games Store, recognizing the significance of this development. He emphasized the tremendous opportunity to reach a fresh and vast population of conventional PC gamers and trading card game enthusiasts through one of the world's leading gaming platforms.

This move comes amid growing tension between Web3 publishers and Steam, the leading global PC game distributor. Friction escalated when Steam publicly excluded Web3 games from its platform in October 2021 and subsequently removed Age of Rust due to the advantages it offered to NFT holders.

In response, former members of MetaMask launched a competitive distribution platform called Hyperplay in March. Hyperplay provides access to the Epic Games and GOG.com stores within its platform and promotes a range of Web3 titles. Recently, on June 8, Hyperplay raised $12 million to further develop its platform and expand its reach.
