Blockchain platform TRON officially unveils BitTorrent File System Protocol

Fri, 31 May 2019, 05:26 am UTC

Blockchain platform TRON has officially announced BitTorrent File System (BTFS) as part of its efforts to create a distributed web platform powered by blockchain technology.

The announcement follows a tweet from Justin Sun, founder of TRON and CEO of BitTorrent, earlier this week in which he said that BTFS is the “next generation of decentralized storage system.”

According to the press release, BTFS is a variant of the open-source InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) protocol. It represents the “first scalable implementation of a decentralized storage system that can be used by decentralized application developers,” the website states.

“BitTorrent File System (BTFS) is both a protocol and network implementation that provides a content-addressable, peer-to-peer mechanism for storing and sharing digital content in a decentralized file system,” it added.

BTFS will be incorporated into peer-to-peer file sharing service BitTorrent to allow users to receive and host storage on their computers with other individuals and businesses.

With 100 million BitTorrent monthly active users, over 1,000 TRON full nodes, 27 Super Representative nodes, and global TronGrid nodes, BitTorrent is poised to become the world's largest distributed storage and media sharing network, TRON said.

"BTFS is a continuing step in our mission to create a decentralized internet that allows everyone to share in the wealth of web commerce," said Sun. "We're creating a platform with BTFS, BitTorrent Speed blockchain integration and the BTT utility token to let users quickly and privately interact with each other around the world without a middleman or government intervention."

Internal testing of BFTS began this quarter and the mainnet is expected to be rolled out in Q3 2019, which will open it to public access and power all TRON dapps that require a decentralized storage network. Full implementation expected by the end of the first quarter of 2020.
