BitMart founder Sheldon Xia said the cryptocurrency exchange was attacked Tuesday, Nov. 3, and that an initial review suggested the same group may have attacked Brazil’s Mercado Bitcoin that day.

Xia characterized the amount involved in the BitMart incident as small. He said the team quickly opened an investigation and strengthened its security defenses.

The suspected connection remains preliminary. Xia described the possibility that the two attacks involved the same organization as an early assessment, not a confirmed finding. Mercado Bitcoin was also named in the suspected link.

BitMart has announced that it is closing and is moving through restructuring and liquidation. The attack disclosure comes as the exchange advances that process.

Xia’s update contains two different levels of certainty: BitMart’s attack was confirmed by its founder, while the suspected shared attacker remains a possibility under investigation. The update did not say investigators had reached a final attribution.
