Lighter Opens EVM Devnet to Connect Smart Contracts With Trading Engine
The EVM produces blocks every second, while requests to Lighter Core run asynchronously and execute in seconds.

Lighter and Axiom opened the Lighter EVM devnet on Friday, Oct. 16, giving developers a way to build Ethereum-compatible smart contracts that interact with Lighter Core, the platform’s order-matching system. The test network is designed to connect contract logic with Lighter’s trading data and order functions.
Contracts can read Core account, balance, position, order and market data. They can also place, modify and cancel Core orders through asynchronous requests, which execute in seconds. The EVM produces blocks every second, but that interval describes block production; it does not establish how quickly an order will be filled.
Developers can deposit assets from the devnet’s private Layer 1 (L1), transfer them between the EVM and Core, and withdraw them back to the L1. Core is configured with test markets. Potential applications include vaults, fast onramps and request-for-quote platforms.
The devnet uses a privately deployed L1 for settlement and data availability instead of Ethereum. L1 finalization relies on mocked zero-knowledge proofs, the escape hatch for asset recovery is not fully functional, and Core data reads are limited to the latest block. These constraints make the network a test environment rather than a demonstration of the complete settlement and recovery design.
The planned design combines proofs from the EVM and Core into one proof for verification on Ethereum. The current setup does not demonstrate that settlement path end to end. Developers are being admitted in cohorts, with broader access expected in the coming weeks.
