Binance Moves SAFU Back to Bitcoin With $1 Billion Target
The exchange began shifting its emergency user-protection fund back into Bitcoin in February 2026 after converting it fully to USD Coin in 2024.

Binance has moved its Secure Asset Fund for Users back into Bitcoin (BTC), restoring the emergency reserve to a target size of about $1 billion after a period in which it was held fully in USD Coin (USDC).
The exchange began the transition in February 2026 and completed the conversion by mid-February. The fund is designed to help cover user assets during extreme events, while Binance continues to monitor its size and rebalance its holdings when necessary.
Binance launched SAFU in July 2018. The fund has historically received a portion of trading fees and reached $1 billion by January 2022.
By April 2024, Binance had converted the reserve fully into USDC. That transaction involved 1.36 million BNB, 16,277 BTC, Tether (USDT) and TrueUSD (TUSD).
The return to Bitcoin changes the reserve’s asset mix while keeping its target value near $1 billion. The fund’s size may be adjusted over time as market conditions and user-protection needs change.
The security update also included scam alerts and continued improvements to Binance’s platform-security measures.
