Vitalik Buterin’s EIP-8141 Targets Easier Ethereum Wallets

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has published an updated Ethereum Improvement Proposal, EIP-8141, outlining major changes to how Ethereum wallets handle transactions, signatures and gas fees.

The proposal is being considered for Hegotá, an upcoming Ethereum upgrade, and could bring advanced wallet features directly into the Ethereum protocol. One of its biggest changes is the introduction of frame transactions, which can bundle as many as 64 actions into a single transaction.

Unlike traditional Ethereum transactions that typically perform one action at a time, frame transactions execute multiple steps in a predetermined sequence. If one step fails, the entire transaction is reversed. This could eliminate situations where a token approval succeeds but a subsequent swap fails.

For users, the change could turn actions such as approving and swapping tokens into a single confirmation. Wallet providers could also combine several onboarding steps into one transaction, potentially making Ethereum easier for newcomers to use.

EIP-8141 also addresses one of crypto’s biggest usability challenges: seed phrases. Instead of permanently tying an account to its original private key, wallets could support key rotation and account recovery through another device or trusted contact. Private keys would remain part of the system, but users could become less dependent on storing 12-word recovery phrases.

Another major feature involves paymasters, which allow applications to cover users’ Ethereum gas fees. This could enable people to interact with decentralized applications before acquiring ETH, with developers potentially treating transaction fees as part of customer acquisition costs.

The proposal also adds support for P256 signatures, a cryptographic standard commonly used by passkeys and smartphone security hardware. Its authors view the feature as a step toward stronger post-quantum security rather than a complete solution to quantum-computing risks.

Ethereum traded near $2,512 on Sunday, up roughly 49% over the previous 90 days.

No activation date has been confirmed for EIP-8141 or the Hegotá upgrade. Ethereum developers are first preparing for the Glamsterdam upgrade, including its planned gas-limit expansion, which is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.
