Top U.S. and Russian officials have discussed bringing a U.S. investor into the Nord Stream pipelines as part of a possible plan to resume Russian gas sales to Germany.

U.S. Special Envoy Jared Kushner participated in the discussions, which focused on pipelines that previously carried Russian gas to Germany before Russia invaded Ukraine.

A restart would face U.S. and European Union sanctions on Nord Stream, making renewed operations or U.S. investment difficult. Poland and the Baltic states would also oppose a potential deal.

A renewed Russian gas supply arrangement could divide opinion in Germany, adding another political hurdle to any effort to reopen the pipelines.
