Pi Network (PI) is back in the spotlight as its price edges higher ahead of a key network upgrade, while node operators face an August 11 deadline to install Protocol v26 or risk being disconnected from the network. The update has renewed interest in the project, pushing Pi Coin higher even as broader market sentiment remains mixed.

According to CoinGecko, PI ranked as the second-most trending cryptocurrency on Saturday, standing out as one of the few major tokens posting gains while many others declined. The token has climbed around 7% over the past week, although it remains down approximately 25% over the last month. Pi Network currently holds a market capitalization of roughly $957 million, making it the 67th-largest cryptocurrency by market value. Daily trading volume remains relatively low at around $8.6 million.

Protocol v26 marks another significant milestone in Pi Network’s ongoing development. The upgrade enhances smart contract security, improves data storage efficiency, and strengthens interoperability with other blockchain networks. According to the Pi Network team, Protocol v26 follows eight successful upgrades and sets the stage for the final planned update, Protocol v27, which will bring the network in line with the latest protocol features and functionality.

The August 11 deadline only affects Pi node operators, who validate transactions using a consensus model inspired by Stellar. Users mining PI through the mobile app are not required to take any action. The previous Protocol v25 upgrade, released on July 22, introduced cryptographic improvements designed to support privacy-focused applications.

Despite the positive momentum surrounding network upgrades, Pi Coin has struggled to maintain rallies. The token surged roughly 24% before the Protocol v25 launch but gave back those gains shortly after. A similar pattern followed the Protocol v24 mainnet upgrade in June. PI also remains about 79% below its price from a year ago after hitting an all-time low of $0.0710 in mid-July.

A major challenge remains token supply. Data from PiScan indicates that approximately 1.71 billion PI tokens are scheduled to unlock over the next year, creating persistent selling pressure in a market with relatively low trading volume. As Protocol v27 approaches, Pi Network’s price outlook will largely depend on whether buyer demand can outpace the steady influx of newly unlocked tokens.
