Non-fungible tokens got a lot of attention lately as NFT artworks sold for headline-grabbing amounts in high-profile auctions. Online marketplace eBay has joined the trend as it recently allowed the sale NFTs on its platform becoming the first e-commerce firm to do so.

On Tuesday, eBay started allowing the sale of NFTs on its platform, according to Reuters. These digital collectibles include images, trading cards, video clips, artworks, and other digital content.

However, the company wants to make sure that the NFTs being sold on its platform come from trusted sellers. eBay will only allow NFT creators who meet the company’s standards to list their digital collectibles.

At the moment, the platform will only accept NFT listings in certain categories such as art, trading cards, music, and entertainment, according to The Verge. However, eBay promised that it will expand its policies, programs, and tools in the future so platform users can buy and sell NFTs across a broader range of categories.

“In the coming months, eBay will add new capabilities that bring blockchain-driven collectibles to our platform,” Jordan Sweetnam explained. Sweetnam is the senior vice president and general manager for eBay's North America market.

A week ago, eBay CEO Jamie Iannone exploring opportunities to enable NFTs on its platform “in an easy way,” according to Cointelegraph. While platform users can already use eBay to deal in NFTs, the CEO said that the company is yet to simplify the process.

“One of the great things about eBay is when there’s a new trend, it just shows up on eBay,” Iannone said. “That’s what we’re seeing in areas like NFT, which we’re looking at how can we explore that better.”

The CEO also said that eBay is exploring other payment options such as crypto. At the moment, some users have successfully listed Bitcoin (BTC) for sale but these auctions do not appear to be specifically sanctioned by eBay.
