Blockchain research and development firm IOHK announced on Friday that it has established a research center at the University of Wyoming (UW), CoinDesk reported. The new laboratory was announced after the firm made a $500,000 donation in ADA cryptocurrency.

The research center would be a part of the university's Blockchain Research and Development Lab. It is aligned with the company’s mission of promoting blockchain technology.

With this, developers would be offered access to an applied laboratory for writing code in cardano's smart-contract language as well as tools and resources for trialing new solutions.

"This is a very applied laboratory, where instead of doing peer theory, we're actually building real-life things and writing real software that will enter production very quickly," IOHK CEO and founder Charles Hoskinson explained in an ask-me-anything session. “Our hope is to have a very substantial presence in Wyoming and write a lot of very good software there."

As part of the partnership, IOHK has granted $500,000 in ADA to the university to support the research and development of new blockchain applications, including new traceability tools and supply chain management.

As per the report, the state of Wyoming is expected to match the dollar value of the grant, meaning that the university will receive $1 million in total initial funding for the new blockchain facility. The university also plans to provide financial support.

"The University of Wyoming is proud to be at the forefront of blockchain research and education, and we are grateful for this significant financial contribution from IOHK," said UW acting president Neal Theobald. "This support will help us continue to move forward in a very exciting and promising field of innovation and discovery."

IOHK has blockchain labs in three other academic institutions: the University of Edinburgh, the University of Athens and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. UW is the fourth academic institution and the first campus in the U.S. that is fully affiliated with the company. IOHK has also collaborated with the University of Connecticut and Virginia Commonwealth University.

In June 2019, IOHK signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Georgian government and Ministry of Education, the Free University of Tbilisi, and the Business and Technology University of Tbilisi.
