The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), a not-for-profit standardization organization in the telecommunications industry in Europe, has announced the setting up of a new blockchain-focused industry group.
Called the “Industry Specification Group on Permissioned Distributed Ledger (ISG PDL),” the group has been founded by C3L (Cadzow Comm Consulting Ltd), Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, NEC Europe, Telefónica, and Vodafone.
The group aims to deploy permissioned distributed ledgers across various industries and governmental institutions. According to the official release, permissioned distributed ledgers are better suited to address the business-oriented use cases that are of interest to industry and governmental institutions.
“The new ETSI group will work on the challenges related to the operation of permissioned distributed ledgers, business use cases, functional architecture and solutions for the operation of permissioned distributed ledgers, including interfaces/APIs/protocols and information/data models as well as other topics,” it said.
The group is going to hold its first meeting on 24 January 2019 at Telefónica, Madrid, which will focus on discussing the key work areas and elect officials.
Founded in 1988, ETSI is one of only three bodies officially recognized by the EU as a European Standards Organization (ESO). It has more than 850 member organizations worldwide, drawn from 66 countries and five continents.
In September 2017, TBCASoft, SoftBank, Sprint Corporation, and Far EasTone Telecommunications founded Carrier Blockchain Study Group (CBSG), a consortium of telecom carriers that aims to build a next-generation global cross-carrier blockchain platform and ecosystem. The initiative has also been joined by LG Uplus, KT Corporation, Etisalat Telecommunication Corporation, Axiata Group Berhad, Turkcell, Viettel Telecom Corporation, and others.
