ICON demonstrates three blockchain apps with Seoul government

South Korean blockchain project ICON has demonstrated three new blockchain apps which would benefit Seoul residents.

At the recently held Blockchain International Digital Festival, hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the startup showcased its project – Blockchain Seoul – to the participants.

In August, ICONLOOP, which provides all technical support for the ICON project, was selected as an operator of Seoul’s standard blockchain platform for the ‘Seoul Blockchain Demonstration Project’, which is commissioned by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

The ‘Blockchain Seoul’ application demonstrated 3-steps of services consisting of:

  • ICON Blockchain Identification Card
  • ICON Blockchain Vote
  • ICON Blockchain S-Coin Payments

ICON Blockchain Citizen ID Card will enable users to create their digital IDs in just a few clicks. Users would need to complete their registration by filling out basic details, along with a webcam photo taken via a laptop. Once the registration is complete, the user would be required to take a photo of the QR code to transfer the ICON ID Card to their mobile phone.

After having created an ID, the user would be able to vote using ICON’s Voting system, which has been developed in collaboration with the Korea National Information Society Agency and the Korea National Election Commission to build the “Next Generation Election System.”

“After the vote, as a reward for voting, the resident would be rewarded in S-Coin, which seems to have a pegging for 1 S-Coin = 1 Korean Won in this demonstration,” according to an online post.

Lastly, ICON Blockchain S-Coin Payments would enable users to go cash-free. It involves scanning a QR code of the product which would transfer details of the product to the app. Users would then be able to make the payment for the product directly using the app, cash-free.

“We have prepared this promotion for citizens to feel more confident about the practicality of blockchain technology,” said JH Kim, the CEO of ICONLOOP and Council Member of the ICON Foundation. “Blockchain technology will ensure privacy rights, realize direct democracy, and further promote the revitalization of local commercial and non-profit sectors in the form of local currency”.

According to the official blog post, ICONLOOP has been applying loopchain, ICONLOOP’s self-developed blockchain engine, to Seoul Blockchain Standard Platform, a used car trading system, and mobile-voting system.
