French retailer Carrefour revealed it has expanded its blockchain technology to Camembert de Normandie (Camembert of Normandy) cheese.

As per a press release, the initiative will allow customers to track the product’s journey by scanning a QR code found on the product label using their smartphones.

Relevant details such as the name and location of the farmers, details about the farms, date of milk collection, and date of manufacture and shipment are included. In addition, customers can access the location map of the producers, as well as information on the manufacturing process and even recipe ideas.

The move makes Camembert of Normandy the 11th Carrefour Quality Line product in France and 22nd in the world to use blockchain technology to trace its cheese’s supply chain. Other products include Auvergne chicken, tomatoes, eggs, microfiltered milk, peaches and nectarines, pomelo, chicken, carrot, and rocamadour.

The implementation was made possible through the collaboration between the actors of the chain, including eight dairy producers supplying the milk of Camembert.

According to Carrefour, the implementation of blockchain for tracing food products has driven sales of these products higher as it boosts the trust of consumers.

The most recent company to venture into the industry is Switzerland’s largest retail firm Migros, which implemented TE-Food’s blockchain-based traceability system for its fruits and vegetables supply chain.

Even Nestlé, the biggest revenue-based food company, has launched a blockchain-based pilot program in partnership with OpenSC to trace milk products, with a plan to extend the technology on palm oil soon.

ORGANO, a leading producer of healthy food and beverages, also teamed up with IBM Trust to implement traceability strategy by sharing key product information to stakeholders.
