Tue, 22 Oct 2019, 06:24 am UTC

More than 50 blockchain media companies and affiliates gathered under one roof on October 21 in Seoul, South Korea to launch a new initiative aimed at transforming the media industry.

Called the Blockchain Media Alliance, the initiative aims to implement blockchain technology in the media industry to lead the future of news, including the financial independence of individual media and fight fake news.

Participating organizations include TokenPost, Korea Blockchain News, Weekly Blockchain, and PUBLISH, among others.

The primary goal is to “represent the responsible voice of the blockchain industry.” Members will work towards facilitating a concerted effort to address the core challenges faced by the blockchain industry.

The alliance will not only endorse the development of blockchain applications across industries, but also raise awareness and understanding of this novel technology and its implications. It will work towards optimizing the operations of the media industry so that publishers can become financially viable without compromising journalistic integrity.

William Jang has been appointed as the President of the Blockchain Media Alliance. Jang has served as a reporter, news anchor and program host at major mainstream broadcast networks and radio stations in Seoul for over 30 years.

Furthermore, Sonny Kwon, founder and CEO of TokenPost, and Chris Sung, CEO of PUBLISH, will serve as Executive Vice Presidents of the alliance.

Speaking at the launch event, Kwon said,“Blockchain technology is in a way a manifestation driven by the desire for decentralization over last decades and is becoming a reality. The role of the alliance is essential in making sure that the technology is not misused and serve the society.”

The media alliance will start full-scale activities and plans to expand to 1,000 member companies by next year. It will hold a meetup next month and plans to organize a global blockchain conference next year.

Starting off, the alliance will host DPA 2019 (Decentralized People’s Award 2019), South Korea’s largest blockchain industry awards, in December 2019.
